hORA: 180 Years of St. Matthew’s Church

On May 17, 1846, St. Matthew’s Church was dedicated with a festive service. At that time, it was still nestled among meadows and fields just outside the gates of Berlin, popularly known as “God’s summer playground. 180 years later, we look back on the history of our church and celebrate its anniversary in the midst of a changing Kulturforum. – from the church announcement.

St. Matthäus in the Kulturforum is, as the name suggests, surrounded by cultural buildings: across from the Berlin Philharmonic, next to the Gemäldegalerie, behind the Neue Nationalgalerie, and soon a new Museum of Modern Art will be its neighbor. They are all packed together, inch by inch. There is no more space for greenery. I am always delighted when my music plays in the church. St. Matthew’s is a true cultural church for contemporary art.
