Ursula in the Mirror
To survive as a composer, I need humor, self-criticism, and perseverance. When I read Ursula Mamlok’s biography, I admired her endurance and active outlook on life. My composition Alusrursula for bassoon is based on her piano piece 2000 Notes from the year 2000. Not a musical notation, but her idea or technique of mirroring, which is adhered to quite strictly in Ursula Mamlok’s piano piece. So I gave my composition the title URSULA with ALUSR at the beginning (her name read backwards). The U in the middle is the axis that lies in the middle section of my composition, where the letters of her first name are spoken.
The sheet music has just been published by Verlag Neue Musik: NM 3213. It is very beautiful and clearly laid out.
