What is “mica”?

It sounds like the name of a cute little girl, doesn’t it? “MICA” is the abbreviation for the Music Information Center. In 1997, Bernhard Günter published the *Lexicon of Austrian Contemporary Music*. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of “mica – music austria,” I was interviewed again.

Since 1997, the contemporary music scene has become more global and open. This also applies to gender roles. Today, composers travel to festivals all over the world. Female composers are no longer a rarity.

I always feel a deep connection to Vienna. I know every corner of the 1st district, right down to the back alleys—the place where the building of the Department of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Music was located and still is. When I studied there, I wasn’t yet aware that I was a composer. I ask myself: Since when have I actually been a composer?

In the interview, I spoke not only about these positive changes but also about the new responsibilities that come with them.
